Shower Tips

The shower leaks won't show up simply by running the shower, you must simulate the conditions when someone is taking a shower. No, you don't have to stand in the tub and get splashed. If the tub is equipped with a shower curtain, you're in luck. A shower curtain is a good sign that water escaped from the bathing unit, onto the floor. The curtain can also be used to simulate the splashing that occurs when someone showers. Start this phase of your troubleshooting by pouring water on the bathroom floor, particularly near the edge of the bathtub. Don't skimp on the water. If the water disappears, expect to hear the homeowner screaming soon. Should the water remain on the floor, move your investigation to the tub walls. Turn on the shower and hold the shower curtain toward the front of the tub, in about the same place a bather would stand. Let the water bounce off of the shower curtain and onto the front and side tub walls. Keep this up for at least 5 minutes. When the homeowner lets you know the leak is back, you have narrowed the list of potential causes. It is either bad grouting or poor seals around the tub spout or faucet handles. Have the homeowner come upstairs and watch through the bath-tub's access door to see if the water is running through at the plumbing outlets or if it is coming through the grouting. If it is not pouring past the plumbing holes, you can assume it is running through the tile walls. As you can see, this type of troubleshooting will be time consuming. If you have a good eye for construction, you may be able to speed up the process. For example, I can usually look at a ceiling and tell which way the floor joists are running. Since water normally doesn't cross through joist bays, I can often pinpoint precise locations for detecting the leak.
