Undersized plumbing piping
Undersized piping can create problems with water pressure. If the pipes delivering water to fixtures are too small, the fixtures will not receive an adequate volume of water at a desired pressure. As a matter of fact, I was on just such a job earlier today. I was called to a meeting hall to determine why their water pressure was not as good as the pressure in neighboring buildings. The building is served by a municipal water supply, so that narrowed the list of possibilities. When I got to the job, I went into the kitchen to test the pressure. Before I ever made it to the kitchen sink I saw the problem. The water heater for the building is located in the kitchen, in plain view. When I looked over at the heater, I almost couldn't believe what I was seeing. The piping at the heater from both the inlet and outlet connections was up to code, but once the pipes rose a foot or so above the water tank, all bets were off. The 3/4-inch copper tubing was connected, with flare fittings, to 1/4-inch copper tubing. The 1/4-inch tubing provided the incoming water to the water heater and carried the hot water out to the building's plumbing fixtures. I removed a few ceiling tiles and traced the path of the tubing. This building is equipped with two bathrooms and a kitchen, and every fixture is supplied with water from the 1/4-inch tubing. Now I'm not talking about 1/4-inch branch feeds; I'm saying that the entire water distribution pipe is run with 1/4-inch tubing. It is obvious that fixtures designed to be fed by 3/4- and '/2-inch tubing will not perform as well when their supply is reduced to a quarter of an inch. In a case like this, the only option is to replace the illegal water piping with tubing that will meet code requirements. Many times the downsizing of piping will not be as drastic as the job I've just described, but inferior piping is common in many rural areas. If you are responding to a complaint of low water pressure. Check the pipe sizing.
