Pure plumbing problems with disposers
Let's take a few moments to look at the pure plumbing problems often encountered with disposers. One of the most common is water leaking under the drain flange in the sink bowl. This is caused by a lack of putty under the flange. If this type of leak occurs on the back side of a disposer, the water from the leak can give the appearance of coming from somewhere else, especially from the trap. If you have a call where water is collecting beneath a sink bowl that is equipped with a disposer, check the drain flange carefully. The lock-ring that holds a disposer in place can become loose, allowing water to leak. These occasions are rare, but they do sometimes happen.
Occasionally, the gasket between the disposer and the drain ell will leak. The leak could be a result of a bad washer or of the connection not being tight. A few quick turns of the lock-screw with a screwdriver will tell you if the problem is a loose connection or a bad washer.
It is also not uncommon for the slip nut that holds the discharge end of the drain ell in a trap to leak. This usually requires nothing more than tightening the slip nut, but a new slip-nut washer may be needed.
